Eco-technology

Eco-technology is a relatively newly coined term. It describes new fields of study, that of looking at the effects humans have on Earth’s ecosystems, but it's not just about nature and ecological systems. It's about the integration of mankinds new technologies into every aspect of understanding life on earth. Man is no longer simply man, he's man and his machines.

The goal of such studies is to implement certain rules of conduct for human interactions that take place in industry and methods of agriculture. The term itself is used to heighten public awareness the relationship between people, industry and land use. It'ss a buzzword that couples with sustainability, or rather man's ability to manage and sustain all live and life forms on the earth.

Thus ecotechnology promises “sustainability” that is, the ability to support life on the planet for the future, because there seems to be this ever present, dominating fear that things here on planet earth are not only fragile, but are going out of control. Pollution, animals and forests disappearing, the numbers dwindling and even becomeing extince. With sustainabilty, the best possible outcomes for everyone will be considered. " Fair trade," "organic," "biodegradability" and being "green" will drive it all. In the religion of sustainability, the belief is that if everyone jumps on the political train, the earth will be saved from impending doom... doom that mankind himself seems to have instigated. Not only that they believe that it will be managed properly.

In a zen sort of way, "sustainability" is that idealistic goal where all things can be perfectly balanced, in harmony with one another, kinda like the yin and the yang of Eastern thought. It’s an organizational aspect to viewing life on earth where everything from the neighborhood cycle of trash collection to the collection of fish in the ocean is controlled by man’s wisdom and superior intellect, not to mention organizational skills. Man and his own invented religion, along with his favorite machine, the computer, are the ultimate humanistic hope for the future.

It’s true that this world and everything in it is passing away. In man's greed he has done his share of damage. People die from diseases, animals become extinct and wars are fought over who it is that controls the rescources, but there is something even truer: This old earth and all the ecosystems seem to work quite well on their own without us.

Many people hold this idea of ecotechnology and “sustainability” forth as the latest guiding principle of life and politics on this planet, the new lens thathelps us see a New Hope for th future of a brave New World. But the real solution is not ecotechnology, nor in the ability of man to sustain himself with all his lofty calculations, considerations and ecological ethics. Eeven in that the hope is only for this life. The real solution is Jesus Christ.

The truth is, God sustains it all. He not only created it, organized it and set it all in motion, he sustains it. In fact, it's He in whom we live and move and have our being, (Act 17:28) and the bible says, it is even He who sustains us. (Psalm 55:22)
