HARBINGER

A harbinger is one who is sent ahead of another to secure lodgings or to make ready a reception for a dignitary.

Being a harbinger was an especially important duty in the days before telegraph and telephone, especially when important people traveled to distant lands. Someone had to go ahead and let the receiving party know that you were coming. Not to do so, then as now, would be considered a rude imposition.
