”I’ll do whatever I want to” is a rebellious attitude and reminiscent of the idea put forth by Allister Crowley, (1875-1947,) who's ’famous words, “Do as thou wilt, is the whole of the law.”
Crowley’s quote, taken from his Book of the Law, (1904) became the “moral rule” for those who practiced and continue to practice what is commonly called witchcraft, or in Crowleian terms, "Magick" Aleister Crowley, they say, is the man who “put the “k” in magick,” and he was mostly known as and occultist, mystic, and drug addict. He did however have some more normal pursuits, like writing, chess, traveling the world and mountain climbing. The normal interests he did have however did not stop him from his exploits of evil and rebellion.
Crowley, though he liked to say and hear other people say, that he put the “K” in majick, really didn’t. Truth was it was Eliphas Levi, a “French Philosopher ” of the 19th century who did that. Crowley just liked to follow in Eliphas’ footsteps.
Alphonse Louis Constant, was Eliphas Levi’s given name, but he renamed himself "Eliphas Lévi Zahed, " which he is said to have derived from the Hebrew translation of his name. He was a man who once studied for the catholic priesthood, and it is said that he did all but the taking of vows. He stopped there because somewhere along the way he became very interested in the philosophies of “magic” arts. Constant, a.k.a. Levi, wrote several books, including: Doctrine of Transcendental Magic (1855), Ritual of Transcendental Magic (1856) and History of Magic, (1860) and he is even thought of, in the occultist’s world of “black magic”, to be perhaps what Michelangelo is to Christianity... as he painted the Sistine chapel to honor God. Constant, (Levi,) in contrast, was said to have painted the western Christian ideologies with occultism.
Constant (Eliphas Levi) wnet down in history as one of the greatest occult “revivalists” of all time. He was not a contemporary of Aleister Crowley, in fact, he had died before Crowley’s birth, but Crowley, a believer in all things occult, including reincarnation, liked to believe he was Constant, reincarnated.
Cowley was raised in a Christian environment, but he rebelled against it all and against its very roots. Edwards steeped himself in everything occult, then he changed his name to Aleister, so as to be different from his earthy Christian father, who was also named Edward. Alister from then enjoyed the power and the fame of being totally rebellious, violent, getting his own way, and being feared by others.
As an avid writer, Aleister wrote books of poetry, though note that it was sexual poetry… and novels as well as manual type information on magic arts, which he recieved as he indulged in the ocult practice of channeling spirits. He wrote The Book of the Law, in 1904 and Magick in Theory and Practice, in 1929. His books, Thelema, (The “bible” of his religion,) and "The Book of Thoth" are broadly used in occult circuits today... as are many of his other works written under his pseudonyms, Frater Perdurabo, HD Carr, and Khaled Khan.
It’s notable too, that Aleister Crowley has gone down in history as the man who put a face to “Satanism” in the minds of western culture. While this is ture, it is also highly propagated that Crowley was not a worshipper of Satan. In fact occultists, like prefer to think that Crowley merely worshipped himself which may be true, but as such it does not nullify the truth about his religious bent. BEsides, such propaganda serves oonly to make the character and personality of the biblical Satan, merely a figment of what they would call “evil” Christianity and makes the devil, "appear" as a sort of imaginary mythical being with no “real” power. They, like Crowley, prefer that the spiritually ignorant person, remain ignorant of the devils schemes and devices... and laugh-off Satan they way they would Alietser… and maybe even laugh about God and sin. To such as these, tis all merely a joke.
Christians, of course, take Satan a little more serious because, Christians who actually believe what these claim is only "mythical nonsense," things about God and Jesus, and Satan. But make no mistake, Satan was unashamedly, much like Aleister, a slover of self and a self-proclaimed hater of God and Christianity. Spirituality is real and God is real and as such it is not all a joke.
And Crowley knew what he was doing when he composed the Gnostic Mass (Leiber XV) to mock Christianity, and he liberally used biblical references in everything he did, even calling himself “the Beast” and using the number “666” of Bible fame. He gleefully announced to the world that he hoped to produce an antichrist child though his “sexual magick.”(with a “K”) But, with all the references and insinuations, he always insisted that he would never stoop “so low” as to worship Satan, God or anything else for that matter. Crowley himself, deceived and thinking himself to be incontrol, and having fun, insisted he worshipped self.
Of course, he liked people to believe that he “summoned” the devil, Bezelbub, Molech, and other “demon beings” (beings of evil named in the scriptures.) He role played his mental ideas that he took time to write down in the many “ ritual” scripts he wrote. He even may have thought of Satan as his guardian of sorts, but he insisted that he didn’t worship “Satan.” He didn’t believe such a person or entity existed, after all, he believed that all of his desires, love, pleasure; interest and beliefs were directed at nothing other than himself.
And it was his self-love, and self-exhalation, his hatred of anything Christian, his indulgence of both heroine and cocaine as well as sex acts of all kinds and animal sacrifices that earned him a reputation. He had no choice but to leave Britain where he lived, the press there dubbing him the “wickedest man in the world” He was living in 1920 to Sicily where he bought the property he named Abbey of Thelema at Cefalu, from which Mussolini, (you know, THE Mussolini, ) felt compelled to deport him from Italy.
When all was said and done, Crowley and his family and friends died ravaged by incredible insanity, ruined by the satanic evil that he willed into his life. Crowley advocated the strength of will, and will against God in particular. He may have even had notoriety for a moment in time, but he died in 1947, penniless, childless, loveless and a confused degenerate drug addict.
Yet Crowley remains a hero in the minds of many people who claim to be dedicated to Crowley’s spiritually occult teachings. Crowley’s “wisdom” from his writings is often quoted. Sometimes we just get snippets as we hear it in song lyrics by rock and roll bands who want to project a satanic image, but other times it is quoted chapter and verse, similar to the Bible or the Koran.
His book, Liber AL vel Legis, contains his famous statements like: “"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law," (AL I:40) Other commonly repeated sayings are, “Compassion is the vice of Kings: " and “Delight, and stir the hearts of men with drunkenness. To worship me, take wine and strange drugs...They shall not harm ye at all.”
His most famous occult writings are titled, The Book of Lies (1913), Magick in Theory and Practice (1929), and The Book of the Law (1938)
Allister could have repented and received Jesus Christ to save him from such wicked ways.... all he would have to do is turn from sin and rebellion... to repent and turn to God, and God would be there for him....and yet, he persisted in going his own way, being rebellious all of his life... and so this is what we read of him today.
And then, there is Jesus. We read about him too.
"Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked?" declares the Sovereign Lord. "Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?... Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die... Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel?" Ezekiel 18:23-31
