By definition, a “night-light” is a little light source placed for comfort or convenience in areas that are dark. It is not a very bright or intrusive light, which is highly desirable for most people. After all, when they wake up in the middle of the night their eyes are sensitive to such a thing. People like night-lights because they want just enough light to see, but not enough to hurt their eyes or wake them completely from sleep.
While a dim light might be preferable for the sake of our own comfort, if we really want to see, then bright light is required. This would be especially true if we are examining something in order to detect a problem and fix it. People need light to see.
All life needs light. The same concept is true spiritual speaking, we need light, true light. The scripture says, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. (Ephesians 5:14) Spiritually speaking God’s word is a lamp from which shines forth truth. Not only does it point to God as being perfect and holy, but also it reveals Jesus Christ. More importantly, like a bright light, it reveals our need for a savior, even reveals the Savior to us.
We live in spiritual darkness until we know Christ.
Because the brightness of truth is so bright, people tend to shy away from it, or they diminish it so that is is only a night light, They prefer, you see, to avoid the bright light of complete truth so they take some of the Bible, but not all. This is how many false religions are created. Dead things do not need light, for there is no life in them. Things of the dark don't like the light and prefer things to be in light subdued or darkness, where they can be hidden, but God's children are children of light and of the day.
You cannot see in the dark.
Natural lighting from the sunshine is good for us. It gives us vitamin D, causes seeds and plants to grow, and it feels glorious radiating against our skin with it's warmth, It's interesting that even with sunlight in abundance, we humans tend to live and work by man made light.
Office buildings are lit up with it, signs and streetlights are lit up with it, we read by it, work by it and even use it to man-made light to -simulate the sun when we are indoors. Somehow, and for some reason we seem to prefer the light we make ourselves, though we desperately need sunshine.
(Man-made light... it’s technology. It helps us manage our own world and live our lives the way we want. )
Besides control and convenience, the man-made light we create has the potential to create man made revenue. Even more importantly it gives us the ability to see at nighttime, when all is dark. Light at night has the unique feature of allowing us creatures of the day to become creatures of the night.
Consider the spiritual world.
Like the natural world we live in, a spiritual world exists too and like the natural world, it needs to be lit up. Unfortunately, man-made spiritual doctrines can and often are used to replace the true light of God’s word. Like spiritual utility companies, man made doctrines are able to create revenue. They even are invented and controlled by men instead of God, to whom such control belongs. God's truth, his rule his reign, his promises fulfilled are light and life to those who find them.
Some forms of man-made doctrine can come pretty close to simulating the real thing, in fact, one would hardly know the difference unless of course one had learned to be dependent upon the natural sunshine instead of incandescent or florescent lighting. sometime these religions with their doctrines and rules seem bright, sometimes they are but little lights of low intensity, light a tiny night-light, and people think they see just fine. Little do they know, such shallow lighting only serve to make them look better than they really are.
God loves humans who have sinned, but sin itself is exactly what separates us from God. How can humanity be cleansed of sin when they think they are better than that really are? Truth is, when people reject Jesus, they remain in their sin, simply because they cannot see that which is obvious when it is in pure and holy light. God has already spoken his judgment, long ago in a garden called Eden, but he has given us His word... a promise and a savior.
John 12:46-48
" I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. "
1John 1:5-10
"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. "
Sins exposed to light will no longer be in the shadows. It can be dealt with properly. In Jesus, our sins can be forgiven and forgotten, covered in the love of God toward us that flowed the day the sinless Lamb of God took our place in death. Only in the light of God and by his grace, can we have victory over darkness and become his children... children of light.
In 1 Corinthians 13:12, Paul the apostle wrote, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”
Yes, it's a spiritually dark world, now. We are in a sort of gray area... an area of grace. But one day, the true light of God will shine upon all, even into the deepest darkness and all sin will be exposed. This radiant glory will reveal all things, even sins people thought were unknown to anyone because they were never exposed to real penetrating light before.
Jesus was not just a source of spiritual light among the many lights from above. He is not just one god among a plethora of good and possible options to believe about God. Light from true light, Jesus is true God and light from true light, His word is a light, and a lamp unto our feet. (Psalm 119:105)
We are not designed to live in night light, nor light made by human hands. We are children of the day. Like flowers in God's garden of life, we are created to live in true spiritual light that comes from his own son.
A little tilling of hard soil,
a little seed of kindness,
a little seed of love,
God’s Love…
God’s promise… and something called truth…
a little living water...
a little heavenly light..
and the next thing you know...
Something is changing about you and the world you find yourself in…
Suddenly,
Like a little seed,
Like a sunflower…
you desire to live your life in the light, following
the Son.
