Esperanto is a specifically constructed, (some say “artificial”) international language that was developed by Dr. L.L. Zamenhof, in 1887. He was Russian born, Jewish and lived in Poland, where he learned a lot of languages. Zamenhof spoke fluently in Polish, Russian, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, French, and English. He had an idea to use his knowledge of language to come up with a language that would be easy-to-learn for all people, one that would help bridge communication barriers between people and this is what became "Esperanto."
Esperanto has been of some interest to people, particularly in the late 1900’s, but it really never caught on as much as the English language has for use as a universal language, though it is popular in Eastern Europe and China. Advocates for a language everyone can understand, can still hope it will catch on, after all the word esperanto means, “one who hopes.”
