Maglev, (short for magnetically levitated,) is a form of propulsion predominantly used for trains. It uses electromagnetic force to lift and propell object, and it's an idea that has been patented since 1912.
In a maglev train system, both the rail and the train exert a magnetic field, and the repulsive force between these two magnetic fields work against each other to levitate the train. Electric power is then fed to coils on the track, and magnets then move the train. The electric power that is fed into this system comes from nuclear, hydro, wind, or solar power so a maglev does not need an engine, and since it does not use as engine, there is no need for the user of petroleum fuel.
This technology has been known about for nearly 100 years, but it's not been cultivated much. There are currently maglev systems in Japan, and China and even in the USA (at Disneyland) but these systems are still, for some reason, considered "experimental."
